Summer course Martel 2008

4-10-2008

‘Ferme Martel’ was the location where the doctorate candidates met each other for the first summer course. ‘Ferme Martel’ is a beautiful old farm in Petit Paris, near St Nazaire Le Désert in the French Department Drôme Provençale. The farm has been property of professor Herman Kuipers and his wife Alice for the past 20 years. It was a full, varied and mostly inspiring course programme. Lectures and discussions where alternated with presentations around the eight doctorate research subjects. Delicious lunches, drinks and diners where organised in restaurants in the surrounding villages. The programme offered sufficient time to work individually. In short, the summer course was a fantastic event, both professionally and personally.

Professor Kuipers, Via Vinci Research Director Hans Broekhuis en President Peter Peene acted as the leaders for the week. It was decided to call the summer course the Martel Summer Course from now on, and to organise this event annually for all doctorate candidates. The possibilities for learning, exchanging experiences, discussing with professors and fellow-candidates and establishing new contacts appeared to be very useful and pleasant. Via Vinci has gotten the ‘Martel’ feeling: self-willed scientific practice, based on well-considered experiences that have been proven theoretically and methodologically. The ‘Martel’ feeling further stands for style and quality, humour and adventure, and discipline and results. Martel: remember this name!
